The Development of Bicycle Tourism and Informational System on Lithuania-Belarus Border Region

PROBLEM: Despite its attractive geography and natural riches, the tourist potential of the project area is not used sufficiently. There is a lack of tourist information about existing attractions (objects of cultural heritage, nature monuments etc.). The region provides too little offer for cyclists. There is a lack of bicycle paths, special maps and information about the routes. The Implementation of the project will enlarge the interest of local people and tourists in exploring the border region. New bicycles routes will contribute to richer tourism possibilities. The partners will cooperate in jointly attracting the visitors to the region.
OBJECTIVES: the partners intend to contribute to the creation of environment friendly and balanced tourism system on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border region and to enlarge the attractiveness of the region to local people and travelers. They will expand the net of bicycles routes, which will result in the enlarged number of visitors in the border region.
RESULTS&OUTPUTS: The project has significantly improved the possibilities for bicycle tourism in Birstonas and Alytus, Oshmiany and Grodno. New bicycle paths were built in Birštonas and Oshmiany. 12 places of rest were constructed in Grodno. Almost 400 of information stands and signs were placed in Lithuania and Belarus.
Trainings on safe cycling were organised for schoolchildren. Maps and information guides for cyclists were produced and disseminated.
